Eric Delgado is a Mexican American composer whose music engages questions of migration, memory, and identity through a contemporary musical lens. His work weaves together Mexican and Latin American traditions and narratives with modern techniques, creating pieces that speak to political and cultural issues across borders.
Recent works include Border Crossing for Orchestra, which reflects on personal migration stories through tone painting; Olas no tienen fronteras, a piece for low flutes reflecting on images of a divided ocean; and Variations on Cielito Lindo, which reimagines a beloved Mexican song in dialogue with contemporary composition. His music has also been featured internationally, including Recuerdos, premiered by members of the Orquesta Filharmónica de Jalisco and the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Zapopan.
Throughout his career as a composer, Eric has collaborated with dozens of professional ensembles and musicians for performances of his works. These include SOLI Chamber Ensemble, Ensemble Ibis, The Florida Orchestra, Our Time Quintet, Orquesta Filharmónica de Jalisco, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Zapopan, The Julius Quartet, Filament Duo, EZ Duo, Del Sol String Quartet, Fresh Squeezed Opera, Danish String Quartet, Frost Symphony Orchestra, and JACK String Quartet.
As an educator, Eric is committed to creating inclusive classrooms, fostering dialogue across disciplines, and connecting students’ artistic practice to larger social and cultural conversations. He has directed bands, taught music history and theory, and mentored young composers, always with a focus on expanding access and supporting diverse voices in music.
Eric’s interdisciplinary work blends composition, community engagement, and research, connecting music with social and political issues. His presentation on "Power and Politics in Music Programming" invited students to explore power dynamics in music, encouraging them to critically examine the formation of musical canons and the politics behind concert selections. His research, including his dissertation piece Border Crossing for Orchestra, explores migration and identity through music. His work as band director at the Children’s Creative and Performing Arts Academy further emphasizes community-driven music-making and collaboration, using music as a tool for dialogue and civic engagement.
Eric earned his DMA in composition from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he studied with the late Les Thimmig, and also holds degrees from the University of Miami and UC Berkeley. His research and teaching highlight the intersections of music, identity, and politics, from analyzing electronic music to guiding students in composition, music theory, and performance in assistantship and lecturer positions.
